Is there morphine syrup that lasts longer?

Answer

The limited shelf life has to do with the oxidation sensitivity of morphine and the preservation of a beverage, which in addition to syrup also contains water. For the first problem we add an anti-oxydance and (or) we reduce the oxygen content in the solution by using boiled water (also bacterial interesting) and (or) adding sugar. For the second problem, the addition of a preservative in the form of Aqua Conservans is appropriate.

This gives as composition:

morfineHCl 300 mg Ascorbic acid 0.1% Aqua Conservans up to 300 ml

For the removal of the bitter taste, nacyclamate (Natrena) can be added or appealed to orange peel, raspberry or currant syrup. Usually a ratio of 1:1 syrup-water is taken. The pH of the specimen must be between 3 and 4 and can be adjusted with a bit of citric acid or 1 drop HCl 0.1 N. The delivery is done in a brown bottle with a maximum quantity of 300 ml; The storage is done in the refrigerator and the shelf life is up to 2 months. In the new edition of the Galenic Formularium stands a potio viscosa with morphine, which is sugar-free and suitable for diabetic patients.
