Question

We were asked (by telephone) to make the next preparation (child with chance of meningitis): Chloramphenicol 1700mg; AQUA AD 100ml.

We have attempted to suspend chloramphenicol with xanthan gum, with no result (subsiding). What could we do to remedy this?

Answer

Chloramphenicol administered orally has completely disappeared and so it may be acceptable that you do not know that chloramphenicol tastes very bitter and that oral administration uses chloramphenicolpalmitate. A formulation was included in the booklet Galenic Formularium under the heading "Suspensions for oral administration". The chloramphenicolpalmitate is dissolved in propylene glycol and again in the mucus solution precipitated.
