Question

Posted on: March 6 2013

Today we were offered the following prescription: capsaicin 0.5% in Orabase DT 1 pot of 100 ml. Use: 2x a day in the mouth. Our problem is actually about the concentration of capsaicin in this

Preparation. < br/> In your question box we found a similar mouth gel with a conc of 0.025% (problem 389). You also refer to Folia of 1999. We find itself in the literature nothing back to 0.5%. Would you perform this preparation to 0.5% departing from capsitic oil resin?

Answer

The use of capsaicin for post-herpes neuropathies is better known. For this, concentrations of capsaicin are used from 0.025 to 0075%. Since capsaicin as a raw material is not available, the use of Oleoresina Capsaicini with a content of 2% capsaicin should be made.

The prescribed quantity of 0.5%, Oleoresina to be understood, corresponds to 0.01% capsaicin. Such concentration seems acceptable to me for an oromucosal application.
