For a patient, papaverine is prescribed 100mg, 3xper day. Is it not better the papaverine. HCl form to use instead of the base form? Is a major difference as regards absorption and biological

Availability? What would you recommend?

Answer

You can safely take papaverine. In normal gastric acid production, it should dissolve as hydrochloride to precipitate back into the intestine below the finely distributed alkaline form, which is most suitable for absorption. The use of acid-reactive substances in capsules is less advisable. After all, when a capsule sticks to the esophageal wall, it can have less pleasant consequences.
