A patient asks us to make a potassium permanganate solution slightly thicker, because a purely aqueous solution is not convenient to apply. How?

We tried with Klucel 1%. Consistency is OK, but the purple color becomes brown. Color changes from purple to dark reddish brown after +-2u after adding Klucel. Chemical reaction that occurs? Use other viscosities booster?

Answer

I fear that every organic molecule will interact. Therefore, I would try with Aerosil or Veegum. Veegum is the purified version of bentonite but I fear that this is still available. Colloidal SiO2 Though but I suspect that you will need a large amount: 10 g + 10 g propylene glycol. Perhaps also disturbs the propylene glycol??
