Our ofthalmologists apparently want a riboflavin collyre. Is there a formula to find?

Answer

I do not have a specific composition of eye drops with Vit B2 but have found that usually recourse is made to riboflavin diNa phosphate (RNaFosf), the water-soluble form. Herewith, the problem of the poor solubility of riboflavin has been circumvented.
I can give up the following formula, which is intended for the preparation of injections but is also usable for the eye.
R/RNaFosf (Anhydrisch!) 640mg (= 500mg riboflavin)
citric acid 60mg
NaCl 850mg
Water for injections up to 100ml
This solution may be autoclaved.
As an antiseptic, phenylmercurate is prescribed 0.001% but I fear that this product is still to be found. Danish Dispensatory uses nipagine 0.1%
for eye drops the concentration is usually equal to 0.1% Riboflavin or 0128% RNaFosf (Anhydrisch). Consequently, the injection solution should be diluted five times for which we can best use physiologically serum. Some add a viscosities booster such as PVA (1.5%) Add in.
Given that it is feared that the RNaFosf will not be available, it may be useful to report that riboflavin can be dissolved in water with a tenfold concentration of nicotinamide. Purchasing PVA can also be a problem. PVA can be replaced by PVP K30 or Povidone K30, which also occurs in compositions of artificial tears and the advantage has to be filterable. The recommended concentration is 5%. The solution remains sterilizable by filtration.
