In our hospital, Mercurochroom 1% Collyre has been used in Neonati for years. I think it is not only obsolete but not without danger. What is the alternative?

Answer

An alternative may be PVP-Jew eye Drops, for which a dosage exists at 0.3% or 1.25%. The latter is said to be used in developing countries in Neonati. A first problem would be the occurrence of irritation. Furthermore, the shelf life is limited. A broken bottle is best kept in the refrigerator with the classic 1-month use mine. Unopened vials can be stored in the refrigerator for 2 months. The compounds read
povidone-iodine 300 mg
after Monohydrogen phosphate 12 AQ 60 mg
sterile physiological serum up to 100 ml
and
povidone-iodine 1.25 g
after Monohydrogen phosphate 12 aq 250 mg
NaCl 800 mg
Sterile water up to 100 ml
after preparation of the solution, it is filtered on a sterile membrane filter 0.2 micrometer in pre-sterilized glass eyedropper vials. When storing, contact with rubber droplet intent should be avoided!
