Composing an alternative formula for the preventive use of a dexamethasone mouthwash agent in patients receiving the oral anticancer agent Afinitor

At the moment, doctors in UZ Leuven want to start a preventive process with a dexamethasone mouthwash (0.5 mg/5 ml) in patients taking Afinitor. In the hospital they will process the dexamethasone in or Exipiens. Given that this is not reimbursed in the first line by the R.Z.I.V., a different formula must be drawn up for the Officina pharmacists. Would you or not add a preservative to this formula? Patients will have to use the minimum 2 months preventive so presumably a large amount will be prescribed (up to 500 ml).

The use of a highly viscous liquid mixture, without the presence of a polymer, is an alternative, which simplifies the preparation method, although the production of a solution of HPMC is quite smooth.

A good composition without using a thickening agent   can be:
