Can you give a good formula for a penicillin syrup? Active substance: Phenoxymethylpenicillin potassium.

Answer

In The Folia February 1995 we find a composition for penicillin V syrup masterly
R/potassium-Penicillin V 5 million IU
Carbopol 974p 0.50 g
Aqua Conservans 50ml
vanillin/Appelsien aroma 0.10 g
sodium saccharinate 0.01 g
Sorbitol solution (70%) Up to 100ml
This suspension is shelf life for 14 days in the refrigerator.

as preparation mode the following can be indicated:

  • Carbopol 974 P is weighed and divided into 25 ml of aqua Conservans.
  • one adds 5 million IU potassium-penicillin V (if one does not have the raw material, one can use 5 tablets of Peni-Oral, which were crushed in a mortar and extracted by a 180 µ m sieve).
  • then the remainder of the Aqua Conservans, in which the sodium saccharinate was dissolved beforehand, is added. Finally, the aroma is added and the sorbitol solution à 70% to a volume of 100ml. The pH of this solution is 4.97.
