A 0.5% atropine eyedrop for a baby.

A physician from UZ Leuven prescribes isopto-atropine 0.5% for a baby. As a speciality, only the 1% Collyre is on the market. Can this simply be diluted with a sterile isotonic ampoule for eye Drops (of Sterop) or is there another solution?

Answer

Indeed there are two solutions.

  1. you can indeed suck up 5ml using a sterile needle and sterile syringe from the specialité and remove it. Then add 5 ml of sterile isotonic solution. After all, I suppose that with the sterile isotonic ampoule you mean "sterile physiological serum" Given the sterile buffer solutions for the preparation of Collyria, which were sold in ampoules, are no longer available.
  2. But you can also prepare 10ml buffer solution pH 4.6 with Benzalkonium chloride (Ziegalic Formularium   PAG 129) and 5 ml sterile filtration in the vial containing 5ml Isopto-atropine 1%.
