Displacement factors
When making suppos, a pharmacon is processed in a suppository base and takes up a certain volume. The displacement factor f is the amount of suppository mass that is displaced by 1 g of pharmaconium. This factor can also be defined as the ratio between the density of the suppo base and the density of the drug. Using this displacement factor, it is possible to calculate how much suppository base needs to be weighed using the following formula:

M= N * (Mm – F*A)

 met    M = Required amount of suppository base

             N = number of suppos to be prepared
             Mm = calibration mass of the shape

             F = displacement factor of pharmacone

             A =  mass of pharmacone per suppository

The displacement factor of a pharmacone can be determined experimentally, but of most solids it is 0.65 in adeps solidus and 0.85 in a magrocol base. Liquids often have a displacement factor of approximately 1. The appendix lists frequently used substances and their displacement factors.
