What are capsugel dr capsules and can they be used in pharmacies?

These capsules are offered on the market as 'acid-resistant'. Can these be used in pharmacies?

Answer

The capsugel dr capsules can be used in pharmacies, just like all other capsules. There is no legal restriction on the use of capsules in the pharmacy. It is important not to confuse the term 'acid-resistant' with 'entheric coating'. The latter is a collection of specifications mentioned in the European Pharmacopoeia.

The acid-resistant capsules of capsule shell 'DR' consist of a polymer that dissolves more slowly than normal capsules, with the result that the active ingredient is released further into the gastrointestinal tract. If entheric coating is used, requirements are laid down here: how many minutes exactly should the capsule remain intact, ... In the case of acid-resistant, there are no precise specifications.

It is therefore wrong to regard acid-resistant capsules as entherically coated capsules. However, the capsugel dr capsules show very good results with regard to the protection of the ingredient. Even in the case of a filled stomach (rise in pH), the capsugel DR caps do not lose their effect, as is the case with entheric coating.

As a pharmacist, it is important to always check whether these capsules are usable and fit in accordance with the required delivery specifications.
